{"id":68,"date":"2010-12-20T20:36:38","date_gmt":"2010-12-20T20:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/192.168.50.22\/index.php\/2010\/12\/20\/sns\/"},"modified":"2026-03-17T21:21:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T01:21:10","slug":"sns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/smegnl.medina.oh.us\/?p=68","title":{"rendered":"Bind DNS via Webmin"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1><a href=\"http:\/\/www.webtop.com.au\/blog\/how-to-setup-dns-using-webmin-2009052848\">How  to setup DNS using Webmin<\/a><\/h1>\n<p>Below are the steps for setting up DNS via webmin&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> Create a Master Zone<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Under the &#8220;Existing DNS&nbsp;Zones&#8221; click on &#8220;Create master zone&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Fill out the following:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Domain name \/ Network&#8221;: yourdomain.com<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Master Server&#8221; : yourdomain.com<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;IP&nbsp;address for template records&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Click on &#8220;Create&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This will take you to the &#8220;Edit Master Zone&#8221; page.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Create Address Records (A)<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>1) Click on &#8220;Address&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>2) Fill out the following:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Name&#8221; : [ leave this blank for the first time ]<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Address&#8221; : [ your IP&nbsp;address ]<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Click on &#8220;Create&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>3) Fill out the following for each server:<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Name&#8221; : [server name. ie..www ]<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; &#8220;Address&#8221; : [ your IP&nbsp;address ]<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Click on &#8220;Create&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Once done, click on &#8220;Return to record types&#8221; at the bottom of the  page.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Allow Access<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you are not on the main options screen, click on the left hand  menu &#8220;BIND&nbsp;DNS Server&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>1) Click on &#8220;Zone Defaults&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>2) Under &#8220;Default Zone Settings&#8221;, &#8220;Allow queries from&#8221; box, select  &#8220;Listed&#8221; and change the box from &#8220;localhost&#8221; to &#8220;any&#8221;.&nbsp; This will allow  anyone to query your DNS server.<\/p>\n<p>3) Click on &#8220;Save&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>4) Click on &#8220;Return to zone list&#8221; at the bottom of the page.<\/p>\n<p>5) Click on &#8220;Addresses and Topology&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>6) Under &#8220;Global address and topology options&#8221;, under &#8220;Ports and  address to listen on&#8221;, select &#8220;Listed below&#8221; and in the first row, make  sure that &#8220;Default&#8221; is not selected, and the second radio box is  selected.&nbsp; In the text box there should be &#8220;53&#8221; indicating that we are  running DNS on port 53.&nbsp; In the &#8220;Address&#8221; column, change the value to  &#8220;any&#8221; to allow anyone to access this port.<\/p>\n<p>7) Click on &#8220;Save&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Forwarding and Transfers<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>If you need to have your DNS ask your ISP DNS then<\/p>\n<p>1) Click on Forwarding and Transfers<\/p>\n<p>2) fill in the server IP to xfer to and port [53]<\/p>\n<p>3) click save<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Restart<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>1) In the top right hand corner, &#8220;Stop BIND&#8221; and then &#8220;Start BIND&#8221; to  restart the service.&nbsp; DNS&nbsp;typically takes 72 hours to propogate, but  more often than not, it takes less than an hour for local DNS&nbsp;servers to  pick up.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How to setup DNS using Webmin Below are the steps for setting up DNS via webmin&#8230; Create a Master Zone Under the &#8220;Existing DNS&nbsp;Zones&#8221; click on &#8220;Create master zone&#8221;.
